About Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a form of psychotherapy that views the mind as being made up of different parts, each with its own thoughts, emotions, and protective roles.

IFS commonly describes four main types of parts: Managers, Firefighters, Exiles, and Core Self. You may notice these different parts in everyday life. One part of you may want to speak up, while another wants to avoid conflict. You may know you need rest, but still feel guilty when you slow down.

At Forward Mind Counselling, IFS may be used to help you better understand emotional patterns, work through difficult experiences, and build a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

How Internal Family Systems Therapy Works

IFS is based on the idea that the mind is naturally made up of different parts. These parts can have different feelings, perspectives, needs, and ways of responding to situations.

You may already describe your experiences this way without thinking about it:

  • A part of me wants to go, but another part wants to stay.
  • Part of me knows everything is okay, but another part still feels afraid.
  • A part of me wants to speak up, while another worries about upsetting someone.

Within IFS, having different parts is not considered a problem. Difficulties can develop when certain parts become stuck in roles that are extreme, rigid, or no longer helpful.

What Can Internal Family Systems Therapy Be Used For?

IFS is used by some therapists to work with a range of emotional, behavioural, and relationship concerns.

It may be used to explore experiences such as:

One of our counsellors can help determine whether IFS, another therapeutic approach, or a combination of approaches makes sense for what you are experiencing.

Internal Family Systems Therapy and Trauma

Trauma can shape how you respond to stress, relationships, vulnerability, and perceived danger. You may become guarded, avoid certain situations, shut down, or react strongly when something feels connected to a past experience.

From an IFS perspective, these responses may reflect parts that have taken on protective roles.

Rather than pushing you to revisit difficult experiences before you feel ready, IFS helps you understand these protective responses first. Therapy can move at a pace that respects your sense of safety, helping you explore what these parts are trying to protect and what they may need before deeper work begins.

Understanding “Parts” in IFS

IFS commonly describes four types of roles that parts may take on: Managers, Firefighters, Exiles, and Core Self.

These terms simply offer a framework for understanding how different emotional patterns may interact.

Managers

Managers are protective parts that try to prevent pain or difficult emotions before they happen. They may show up through perfectionism, people-pleasing, overthinking, self-criticism, avoiding risks, or trying to stay in control.

Firefighters

Firefighters are protective parts that react once difficult emotions have already been triggered. Their goal is often to reduce or escape discomfort as quickly as possible.

They may show up through shutting down, distraction, anger, impulsive behaviour, emotional eating, substance use, avoidance, or staying constantly busy.

Exiles

Exiles are parts that carry painful emotions, memories, or beliefs connected to experiences such as fear, shame, grief, loneliness, or rejection.

Core Self

Within IFS, the Core Self refers to a grounded inner state that is separate from individual parts. It is associated with qualities such as calmness, curiosity, compassion, clarity, confidence, courage, creativity, and connection.

IFS therapy aims to help you access more of this Self-led state so you can understand and respond to your different parts with greater awareness, rather than feeling controlled by them.
