What Is Narrative Therapy?

The way we talk about our lives shapes how we see ourselves.

When someone has been living with anxiety, trauma, grief, low self-esteem, relationship conflict, or another ongoing struggle, it can start to feel like the problem defines who they are. Over time, that story can become heavy. It can affect confidence, relationships, choices, and hope.

Narrative therapy helps create space between you and the problem. Instead of seeing yourself as broken, stuck, or not enough, you begin to look at the problem in a new way. From there, it becomes easier to understand its influence, recognize your strengths, and build a story that reflects who you are more fully.

How Narrative Therapy Can Help

Narrative therapy may be helpful if you feel defined by a painful experience, stuck in an unhelpful pattern, or weighed down by a story about yourself that no longer feels true.

It can support people who are dealing with:

Narrative therapy can also be useful when someone feels disconnected from their strengths or unsure how to move forward. It creates room to slow down, reflect, and rebuild a more balanced understanding of who they are.

Core Concepts in Narrative Therapy

One of the main ideas in narrative therapy is simple but powerful:

The problem is the problem. You are not the problem.

This shift can change the tone of counselling in an important way. Instead of asking what is wrong with you, narrative therapy asks questions like:

  • How has this problem been affecting your life?
  • When did it begin to take up more space?
  • What has it tried to tell you about yourself?
  • When have you responded to it differently?

This process is often called externalizing. It helps separate your identity from the issue you are facing so you can respond with more clarity, choice, and self-compassion.

What to Expect During Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy sessions are thoughtful, supportive, and conversational.

Your counsellor will work with you to understand the problem, how it has been affecting your life, and what story has formed around it. From there, sessions may focus on the parts of your identity and experience that deserve more space, attention, and meaning.

You do not need to have the right words before starting. You do not need to have your whole story figured out. Counselling can begin with what feels hardest right now and build from there.

At Forward Mind Counselling, our goal is to offer a safe, non-judgmental space where you can reflect, process, and move toward change in a way that feels honest and manageable.
